Tatami mat floors shaped like a dragon by Japanese artist Kenze Yamada

A New Twist on a 1,300-year-old Japanese Tradition

Tatami Anarchist Kenze Yamada

Japanese artist Kenze Yamada’s unusual tatami have made a huge splash in Japan since they were introduced. The dragon flooring below is created from about 200 individually handcrafted pieces!

Tatami also feels cushiony underfoot and has many health-giving properties: its refreshing scent is calming, it absorbs excess moisture and toxins like carbon-monoxide from the air, retains heat and is allergy-friendly.
